My Cup Runneth Over

My rain gauge cup, which is marked up to 5", is overflowing. We had expected heavy rain and wind yesterday from the remnants of Nicole, but only received about an inch until about 7PM. Then the torrential rain began and started blowing sideways at times. If the gauge is an indication, it must have continued all night long. This morning we have received at least another inch on top of the 5+ that have already come down. I know that in Florida this doesn't seem like much, since they can get close to that amount in one heavy shower. Up here in the northern climates, this much rain is an unusual event.

There are reports of flooding in many places, and the Waterford floating docks are rising. Their live webcam (click to go to it) shows no boats there, so they must have been evacuated in anticipation of higher water levels. If you go to their website you can see the current flying by the docks, so the locks must be letting water out to try and keep the levels under control on the Mohawk River. Luckily our sandy soil here on Pashley Rd. drains well and we have no flooding. Even our fish pond seeks its own level, so we won't have to worry about finding fish flopping around outside their concrete pool. In fact they are loving this deluge and having tug-o-wars with worms that have fallen into the water!

Although I just looked out and it has started pouring once again, the weathermen have 'promised' that the sun will make an appearance later today. Then we can get back to our projects. I will also need to get out in the trails and check for fallen trees and branches. We sure are glad that we cut down those large trees over the shed last weekend. It was perfect timing.
