Relativity

We had a fantastic Labor Day weekend with my sister Sue and brother-in-law Len, up in Ticonderoga. The weather was predicted to be iffy with some rain and fog, but we beat the odds and even got to go Sashaying on Schroon River.

Goofing off for the photographer at the dock.

Sue and Len (and I) relaxed while Captain Dave took us "up a lazy river."

End of the line where there is a dam.

After dinner we took a walk on the new Champlain Bridge to watch the sunset. Dave contemplates the long walk to the apex of the bridge.

Sue is in NY and I am in Vermont as the sun sets into the clouds behind mountains.

Ridin' along in the backseat of the PT Cruiser Convertible with the top down, enjoying the breeze, view, and company!

Mt. Defiance's view was a hazy one on Labor Day. You can tell I don't like heights...

We ended up at the Ticonderoga Visitors Center Museum which told all about the history of the paper mill and graphite mining days. Dave and Sue hold a large replica of the famous Ticonderoga pencils we all used in school.

The weekend was so much fun that we are going to try and get together again this fall and visit the Shelburne Museum. I'll be sure to post more photos, especially since none of us have been there in a long time.

Back Up

My computer is back up and running again (thank goodness I backed up my documents and photos before it crashed!), and now it's time to back up and tell you about what we have been doing for the past month. This will be a bit out of order and fragmented, but it will help to get you caught up. I will do a few individual posts on events that have more photos. Meanwhile....

We went to the ACBS boat show in Burlington and Sashayed around the waterfront and Shelburne Bay of Lake Champlain with Catherine and David.

We also went the ACBS boat show in Lake George Village.

Back up to Lake George Village a few weeks later for the Adirondack Nationals Car Show.

The same weekend of the Adirondack Nationals was the 2013 Rice-o-rama motorcycle swap meet. This year seemed to feature many of the bikes that we have owned through the years, like this CB175 (mine!)

and this Honda three wheeled ATV...

and this Yamaha Seca 550 (ours was pristine!)

Back at the Pashley Ranch, Dave was doing some work with the New Holland when a hose broke and he got stuck in the woods when it wouldn't start. Our 1941 Farmall came to the rescue and towed it out....after IT got rescued by Karl when it ran out of gas!

Stay tuned...more summer adventures to follow!

Still Waiting

I'm still waiting for my computer to be fixed and don't want to download my summer photos until I get it back from the repair shop. Meanwhile I am working on an old, very slow computer. Perhaps these photos of Dave's xrays taken after his surgery will help hold everyone over until I am back up to par again.....

Up The Creek

A visit to Vergennes, Vermont isn't complete without a visit to the public docks at the base of the waterfall on Otter Creek. The water was really high when we visited so there weren't too many boats, and we were surprised to see these two steam powered launches. We later found out there was a steamboat meet along the Otter Creek that day, and saw several more as we drove down along the shore.

As beautiful and traditional as these boats are, I am glad that our Sashay isn't as complex. All we do is turn the key and hit the ignition button, and off we go with the little Yanmar diesel engine chugging away.

We Are A Sight

Every summer we like to spend time along the Burlington, Vermont waterfront. This year has had its challenges, but we are adapting. Normally we would bring the double kayak on the roof of the van, but neither one of us can put it up there or get it down. Instead we brought my single kayak on our utility trailer, along with Dave's classic 1970 three wheel bicycle. While I paddled, he peddled! His physical therapist has him on a stationary bike so the tricycle is perfect exercise for him. It is however very tiring and I caught him taking a well deserved break. Sore but happy...

Meanwhile, I kayaked along the waterfront and breakwater, which must have been almost underwater a few weeks ago when the lake's water level was near flood stage.

While paddling across the channel between the shore and the breakwater I had to stay out of the way of two tour boats and the Port Kent, NY car ferry. The aging Adirondack is the same ferry our family came across Lake Champlain on back in the 1960's.

All these sailboats were ready for the kids to go out on, but the wind died. Great for me, but frustrating for them.

These longboats were two of several in the marina, and belong to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum. They try to have rowing races every year, depending on the weather.

The summer is flying by and our trip to Burlington was a huge success. Dave even drove our standard shift PT Cruiser Convertible. He is getting better at using the clutch and shifting, which is difficult with his broken left femur and broken right wrist. Once again, adapting is what it's all about!

Sashaying Through The 1000 Islands

We had a windy and stormy start to the weekend...so windy that we couldn't launch Sashay on Friday. Driving to the St. Lawrence River was a bit difficult, so we stopped for a break and ironically parked next to this boat that was quite the opposite of ours.

Once settled in at the motel, a storm hit and a huge near by tree split and fell on a neighboring house.

When the weather cleared on Saturday, it was gorgeous out and a perfect day for touring the antique boat show on the Alexandria Bay public docks. Friends Catherine and David drove down from Montreal to join us.

We saw many wooden boats, but this 1945 Coast Guard built launch was our favorite. The owner was very detail oriented, but of course we are a bit biased.

That's Her reminded me of the tour boat that we went to Boldt Castle on, back in the 1960's when my family visited the area.

Looking and craving all these wooden boats led us to launching Sashay, which is just as classy, but much easier to take care of since she is fiberglass.

As we were launching, a huge race boat was waiting to use the ramp also. It came complete with its own fuel hauler. We kept kidding David and Catherine that we were going to tell everyone in the sailing club that they are trading their sailboat in on this.

Once in the water, we got a different perspective on everything happening at the docks.

We cruised around several of the islands admiring the the estates and even the tiny houses built on rocks. Being in the St. Lawrence Seaway gave us the added advantage of seeing a freighter go by.

 Two Davids contemplating.

Two C's enjoying the ride!

Sunday morning we woke to bright but chilly weather, which was actually a nice change from the 90+ degrees we had been having the past week.  Dave and I spent the morning Sashaying towards Canada, going under the bridge that leads to the border.

Our goal was to go through the rift with its swift current. Although the little Yanmar 2 GM 20 h.p. motor only pushes us along at 6 knots, it handled the current that was against us, just fine.

We felt like we were the African Queen and for Dave especially, this was a dream come true!
