Walking the Bridge

Before we were sick, we took a late day walk on the Lake Champlain Bridge. It spans the southern beginning of the lake near Crown Point and Port Henry, over to Vermont. Does standing on the State Line between New York and Vermont put us in 'No Man's Land'? 😉

I took an awesome panorama photo looking north, but it may not come out very good on this post. Try clicking on it and, if you are using your phone, turn it sideways.

These shots of the remnants of Fort St. Frederic and the Crown Point Lighthouse on the NY side, came out pretty good too.

Looking at my photos makes me want to get back out on the water again!

4 Years Later

It has been over 4 years since COVID reared it's ugly head in the world. Apparently we must have let our guard down, because, for the first time since the pandemic started, Dave came down with it 5 days ago. I tried to be careful, but a few days later I tested positive, which was my first time too. Interestingly, Dave's symptoms have been different than mine. Luckily mine seem to be mild cold-like without the fever and horrible bone aches that he has had (maybe because I had the booster shot last December and he didn't). We are both on the mend though, getting bored, and awaiting when we test negative so we can get out and about.

Gas Up

The second and third weekends in June is the annual Gallupville Gas Up and although chilly and windy, Saturday was still a good day to go see all the tractors and engines. We brought the Cushman to ride around on, but did more walking than riding. We do like seeing all the kids being involved and having fun driving different vehicles around. I don't have any captions for the photos, but they give an overview of the displays. Enjoy and do check out the engine in the Ford tractor closer, since it definitely isn't stock. 😉

There were even 5 Panzer tractors there (photo of 4 on display above), so Dave went back the next day and brought his modified 1956 with the Honda 750 engine he installed. It was a big hit in the Sunday parade!

Paper or Plastic?

Do you remember being asked that question at the store check out a long time ago? The paper and plastic I'm talking about in this post are a bit larger than bags though. Perhaps you noticed in my last post that it looked like I was in a canoe instead of a kayak. That's because we are now proud owners of two 10 foot long Hornbeck Lost Pond canoes. We have been looking at these for a few years after seeing and lifting one while helping a lady out on Lake Champlain. They are made of Kevlar with wood trim and only weigh 15 lbs.! Even though they look like a canoe, you paddle them like a kayak. We have been talking about going to where they are made in Olmsteadville, since they have demos that you can try out. However, about a week ago, Dave saw two used ones being offered for sale on Facebook Marketplace for less than half the price of new, and the ad was only an hour old. Knowing that they are extremely popular and sought after, he immediately inquired. Luckily we were the first in line and they said they would save them for us until the following morning! By the time we bought them nearby in Broadalbin, they had 5 other people on a waiting list. The canoes were definitely used and scratched, but have lots of life left in them. We added footrests and more comfortable seats, and we have taken them out several times. Dave can carry both of them at the same time with one on each shoulder. Another calm day, this time on Lake Champlain at Port Henry...

We still like our plastic Swifty kayaks for longer trips and if conditions are marginal (or if we plan on dragging them up on rocks for picnics), but they are so much heavier, especially as we age! 😉 So now that we have our super light Hornbecks or sturdy Swifty's, when it's time to load up to go paddling Dave asks me, "paper or plastic?"

Can Deer Swim?

Why yes they can and we witnessed it this morning while kayaking Lake George's Northwest Bay Brook! At first I saw it go down to the water's edge in a marshy area. I figured it was going to get a drink but then it kept on walking until it swam to the other side of the brook.

What a lucky sighting and once again, we were the only people around. We also heard and saw two loons and all sorts of birds that I added to my growing life list. What a gorgeous area!

We timed it well too, because as soon as we returned, thunderstorms started rolling in over the mountains. Another '10' day for the record books!

First Dive

What a day it was on Lake George today with total calm and very few people! We took Moxie down to the Waltonian Islands where Dave had his first plunge into the chilly 69 degree water (actually he did it twice!). I think I will wait awhile to go swimming though. 😉

Summer has begun!
