A '10' Day On Lake Champlain

Kingsland Bay, Vermont is one of the prettiest bays on all of Lake Champlain. Located in Ferrisburgh near Vergennes (another favorite spot), we discovered the Town Beach near the Kingsland Bay State Park. This is a popular spot for launching kayaks, although it is almost impossible to swim there in the beach's shallow water, especially now with the lake so low.

The state park itself is lovely, with a sprawling lawn leading down to the water's edge and a concrete dock to swim off of. There is also a mooring area for small boats which makes it all look a lot like Maine.

We launched the kayaks and headed out the bay which is protected from the south winds. Today wind was not an issue because it was flat calm. We didn't even have to worry about wakes or being run over by boats because the lake so is large. We had a picnic lunch in a small rocky cove and were surprised to see how clear the water was. All those zebra mussels were at work filtering the water, but I am sure causing havoc clogging boat thru hulls and engine intakes.

It was interesting to see how low the water actually is right now with the white mineral stains indicating the high water marks on the boulder.

Our quest was to head north and find the entrance to the South Slang Creek that we cross when we are heading in the van to the park. It was a bit hard to find among all the marshland, but we knew we had found it when we went aground on the delta sand bank at the mouth of the creek (the water coming out of the creek was very brown and murky). Tons of gulls, terns, geese, ducks, herons, and egrets were hanging out on the sandbar.

Dave tried to read this post sign that we thought was a marker for the way in the creek, but it ended up being an advertisement for a man who had something to do with duck blinds for duck hunting season.

We were glad to have found the creek, but decided to leave the exploration of it for another time, since we had more to see and the lake was so calm, which is rarity. Conditions were perfect for spotting the legendary sea creature Champ, but alas it didn't surface. 😉

We circumnavigated this private island (that I can't find a name for) and found a sentry guarding it.

What another fantastic day on the water and when we discovered the mouth of the creek I couldn't help to say, "look, we found a 'new horizon'!"
