Beyond Summertime

Wow! Yesterday was the best day of kayaking we have had all year. We launched at the Ticonderoga Beach and paddled across Lake George to Rogers Rock. Conditions could not have been better with no boat traffic, and it doesn't get calmer than this!

We passed by the Lake George Steamboat Company Railway (aka the Crandall Marine Railway) and what a sight to see the Minne-Ha-Ha hauled out for maintenance. You can even see that she now has a propeller and extra rudder to help her maneuver during her hour long tours of the lower end of the lake.

The water here is just so clear and we could see the fish swimming in the underwater portion of the railway. The railway track goes a very long way out into the bay and deeper water, so the large boats can float on and then be hauled out of the water. Some day we would love to watch this procedure.

As we got closer to Rogers Rock, the view was even more spectacular.

This is why it is also called Rogers Slide...

Then we heard voices and saw kayaks pulled up on the spit of land under the Slide (most of this area goes straight down into the 60 ft. of water. We looked up to see a man climbing up the rock face with his friends preparing to follow him at the base. A lady paddled up to us as we were watching and very proudly said to us, "That's my Dad up there. It's his birthday and he just turned 69 years old!"  What a fantastic feat, but as I told Dave, you won't see me (or him!) doing that at 69.😉

What a memorable day. We even stopped to go swimming on the way back to the beach. Not bad for mid-September!
