We were traveling by the U.S. Sailing Center in Jensen Beach last week and saw a sign saying that the boat launch ramp was going to be closed on the weekend due to an event at the sailing center (the ramp is next door). We then found out it was the Junior Olympic Sailing Festival with approximately 275 Optimist prams and 50, 420's expected to race on Saturday and Sunday. We went out to lunch on Saturday with friends from Hope Town, Paul and Ann, and decided it was the perfect opportunity to check out the festivities. Unfortunately the racing took place across the river so we couldn't see too much, but it was still interesting walking around the sailing center and seeing all Optis and vendors.
The boat dollies on the beach indicated just how many were out sailing...
This was a huge two day event and from what we have read, there will be more regattas this winter. If we are lucky, maybe next time we will be able to see these competitive kids sailing closer to shore.
